History & description

St Mary and St Philip Neri in Radcliffe opened its present church and parish centre in May 2009. The Catholic mission began in 1861, initially using a former Methodist chapel. A church and school followed in 1876, and another church opened in 1894, when the dedication was expanded to include St Philip Neri.

The present building
The older church had become unsuitable for the congregation's needs. The replacement, designed by Greenhalgh & Williams, combines a low church with parish accommodation and a shared entrance. Broad brick piers alternate with tall windows along the sides.

Interior character
A wide, shallow roof covers a simply finished interior with timber fittings and a compact sanctuary. This entry concerns the modern Catholic building on Belgrave Street, not Radcliffe's Anglican parish church or one of the congregation's nineteenth-century premises.
