St Marys Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church Manchester

History & description

One of the first parishes of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church to be established in England, formed in 2004 and worshipping at Moffat Close in Breightmet.

Tradition

The Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church belongs to the Oriental Orthodox family and traces its origins to the Christians of Kerala in south-west India, who hold that the faith was brought to them by St Thomas the Apostle. Its liturgy is the West Syriac Rite, and the principal service is the Holy Qurbana, celebrated here each Sunday morning.

The parish serves the Syriac Orthodox community across Greater Manchester rather than a geographical neighbourhood, and it is a registered charity whose objects include relief of poverty and sickness both locally and in India.
