Saint Michaels Great Lever

History & description

The parish church of Great Lever, listed Grade II, and the senior of the four congregations in the Seven Saints Team Ministry.

History

The church of St Bartholomew was erected in 1879 in the Early English style, with a chancel, nave, aisles and a south transept. The ecclesiastical parish of St Bartholomew was carved out the following year, in 1880, from the parishes of Great Bolton and Great Lever — one of many new parishes created as Bolton's mills drew population out into what had been farmland.

The dedication has since been combined, and the church is now St Michael with St Bartholomew.

Parish

The Seven Saints Team Ministry, in the Diocese of Manchester, brings together St Michael with St Bartholomew at Great Lever, St Catherine's at New Bury, St James at New Bury, and St Simon and St Jude, which meets in a primary school.
