The parish church of Tonge Moor, serving Tonge Moor, Tonge Park and Hall i'th' Wood, and one of the most distinctive Anglo-Catholic interiors in the town.

Back to Baroque

St Augustine's belongs to the "Back to Baroque" movement — a turn away from Gothic Revival among Anglo-Catholic parishes in the earlier twentieth century, encouraged by priests returning from Austria, Germany and Italy with continental ideas about how a church should look.

The arrangement of the sanctuary reflects the liturgical thinking of Dom Gregory Dix: a nave altar stands forward of the high altar, which serves as a reredos and carries the tabernacle. There is a Lady Chapel, a side altar built as a war memorial, Stations of the Cross, and statues of St Columba, St Aidan, Our Lady and the Sacred Heart.

Tradition

The parish worships in the catholic tradition of the Church of England and receives the pastoral and sacramental care of the Bishop of Beverley. A community of nuns was once attached to the parish, and it was largely through their fundraising that the mission church of St Aidan was built.
