History & description
All Saints at Stand, Whitefield, is a Grade I listed Commissioners' church built between 1822 and 1826. Designed by Charles Barry, it is an early work by an architect later associated with major national buildings. Historic England describes unusually elongated Gothic proportions.
Exterior
The tall west tower incorporates a very high open porch. Long windows, battlements and pinnacles emphasise the building's vertical lines. The east end takes the form of a polygonal apse rather than a simple flat wall.
Interior
Slender piers support decorative plaster vaults, while galleries occupy part of the church. The heritage record identifies memorials to James Ramsbottom and James Clegg, both dating from the 1830s, and records a carillon installed in 1906. The church is a useful place to explore the early nineteenth-century revival of Gothic forms before the later Victorian church-building period.
