History & description
St Joseph's in Bury traces its beginnings to 1861, when an old store in Walmersley Road was acquired for use as a combined church and school. A purpose-built church opened in 1871. The architect has not been established by the Taking Stock survey.
A Victorian church behind a later frontage
The red-brick Gothic building has stone dressings, pointed windows and a slate roof. A two-storey entrance building was added across the west front in the 1950s. Behind it, the original church front and stone bellcote can still be distinguished.
Interior features
An elaborate timber hammerbeam roof dominates the nave. The sanctuary is flanked by small chapels, and the east window commemorates figures including Father John Fraser. St Joseph's and St Marie's were combined as a parish in 2009, but their church buildings have separate histories and separate entries here.
