OUR HISTORY
The precise date of the building of the first church in Bolton town centre is unknown, though evidence unearthed when the foundations of the present church were being excavated points to a long history. The Saxon cross displayed in the church’s west porch dates from the early 10th century, suggesting a burial ground on the site though not necessarily a church building. The earliest traces of a church building are fragments of stonework dating from the eleventh century. At this time, the church would have been served by the monks of Maresay Abbey in Nottinghamshire. It was not until 1254 that the name of an incumbent (vicar) is recorded – one John de Sanwyog.
